The Beginning

A first step onto the international stage.

In 1956, Rosalind Iva Joan Fung became the first woman to represent the country at Miss Universe. Guyana was then the colony of British Guiana, a decade away from independence.

This chapter of the archive is still being assembled. Photographs, programs, newspaper clippings and family recollections from this period are welcome.

The Early Years

Six women. One decade. The years leading to independence.

Between 1956 and 1966, six women carried the country’s name to Miss Universe: Rosalind Iva Joan Fung, Clyo Fernandez, Gloria Blackman, Mary Rande Holl, Cheryl Viola Cheeng and Umblita Claire Van Sluytman.

Guyana became an independent nation in 1966, the same year as the last representative of this era.

The working archive records no Miss Universe representative for Guyana between 1967 and 1998. Any broader national pageant history from these years will be documented separately in Guyana’s Pageant Heritage, so that no one is incorrectly listed as a Miss Universe representative.
